Art Competition 2021
WINNERS AND ALL ENTRIES
FIRST PRIZE goes to Jane Beesley with "The Longing Mountain"
Jane's painting will be featured between 24 and 26 September in the window at Soden Collection on 80 Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury.
Acrylic and pencil triptych on x3 30x30 cm wood panels
I particularly enjoy exploring wild and rugged land and seascapes. Abstracting elements and using different tools to apply paint and mark making. This painting uses a limited palette of black, white, red, and yellow ochre.
I called it 'The Longing Mountain' as it was painted early this year when we were unable to travel to the wilds of Wales during the pandemic.
SECOND PRIZE goes to Martina Risaliti with "Wavy Sea"
Martina will be featured in an Art Profile in "My Shrewsbury" magazine and also ONLINE HERE
Medium: gouache paint and coloured pencils
Size: 11.7 x 16.5 inches plus mounting and framing
This piece is part of a set of illustrations realised for an illustrated book soon to be published. It represents the struggle of the character who is experiencing powerful emotions but is not able to communicate what she feels. It seems like she is living underwater, being protected and separated from the real world
JOINT THIRD PRIZE goes to Leisha Kemp-Walker with "Columbine"
and Morgan Bird with "Portrait of Marc and Rachel: 8 Today"
Leisha and Morgan each win an Art Voucher in the amount of £25
donated by the Belle Vue Arts Festival
The piece I’ve sent is a study of Aquilegia vulgarise, or Columbine. It’s painted with watercolour, and the original is roughly 40cm x 25cm. I studied the plant lots last year, and sketched different stages of the flower. In the composition I tried to give an accurate representation of this beautiful plant with its delicate, swan-like petals, in the style of a traditional botanical study
The painting is oil on canvas and is called "Marc and Rachel: 8 Today". They are super supportive friends and this was a gift, which has not yet been delivered because of lockdown etc... I love all things paint and pigment and think oil paint in particular is a magical thing. Much of my other work uses imagery or reimaginings of past paintings, usually always portraits or figures, and I love to incorporate art history into my work; this piece uses traditional oil techniques, such as glazing and impasto to produce a contemporary but traditional piece that showcases all the things oil paint can do. I am looking to create paintings not just pictures and love the work of Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Peter Howson, Ken Currie, George Condo and Yoshitomo Nara
